Position Focus:
Carrying out genetic research experiments using molecular biology and genetics techniques for psychiatric disorders, particularly substance dependence and schizophrenia.
Principal Responsibilities
1. Performs equipment maintenance and repair. Modifies and adjusts equipment and apparatus according to experiment and specifications. 2. Creates instructional materials. Oversees and instructs support staff and students in laboratory techniques and equipment usage. 3. Performs specialized scientific/laboratory procedures and techniques. Formulates scientific solutions and media. 4. Maintains laboratory facilities and work areas. Orders supplies, equipment, and apparatus for laboratory experiments. 5. Performs additional functions incidental to laboratory activities.
Required Education and Experience
Six years of related work experience, four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and high school level education; or four years of related work experience and an Associate''s degree; or little or no work experience and a Bachelor''s degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
Required Skill/Ability 1:
Ability to independently perform genetic experiments, e.g DNA/RNA extraction, cell culture, PCR, Northern and Western blot, molecular cloning, gel mobility shift assay.
Required Skill/Ability 2:
Ability to work in close collaborations with the other members in the lab.
Ability to perform routine lab maintenance tasks that are necessary for the smooth operation of the lab.
Required Skill/Ability 3:
Ability to perform specialized scientific/laboratory procedures and techniques. Ability to formulate scientific solutions and media.
Required Skill/Ability 4:
Ability to maintain laboratory facilities and work areas, order supplies, equipment, and apparatus for laboratory experiments.
Required Skill/Ability 5:
Demonstrated strong computer skills to record and manage the research data.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
BS degree or higher. Previous experience with molecular biology skills and techniques.
